FOOD
The
fun part of teaching class is the different people you meet. Each school will
have its own back ground and make up of students. Taekwon-Do unifies all into
one family and everybody helps each other. For me the fun part that unifies me
to other students and parents is food. I love to get recipes for all different
types of international foods and try just about anything.
I
made a small list of all the different ethnic students I have taught and tried to
sneak some recipes from them.
Canadians,
Americans from just about every state, from Mexico at least 5 different States,
Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama, all over the
Caribbean, Brazil, Peru, Egypt, Cameroon, Nigeria, Liberia, Ghana, South Africa,
Cote de Ivory, Ethiopia, Qatar, Rwanda,
Uganda, just about all of Europe, Japan, Korea, China, Mongolia, Philippines, Taiwan,
Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, India, Pakistan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Australia, New
Zealand…… and many many others.
But
I like to share a special recipe I got from a very high ranking official of CTF
from his wife. I am addicted to Korean food and frequent the Korean community
in my area since it is a large one. So since TKD is Korean lets share the
Korean recipe.
Beef
Bulgogi is almost a regular staple on the Korean dinner table. It is Grilled marinated
beef. One of the most popular Korean dishes, this thinly sliced meat has a
smoky sweet flavor when cooked on a grill. It's even delicious stir-fried, and
the tender beef can be used in anything from Korean rice rolls (Kimbap) to
Stir-fried noodles (Chapchae). Bulgogi is usually accompanied with
lettuce wraps and spicy red pepper paste (Kochujang) for wrapping and spicing
up the meat. You place the meat and rice on a large piece of lettuce and swab
as much chili sauce as you desire and you have what has been called a Korean
Taco
1
pound flank steak, thinly sliced
5
tablespoons soy sauce
2 1/2
tablespoons white sugar
1/4
cup chopped green onion
2
tablespoons minced garlic
2
tablespoons sesame seeds
2
tablespoons sesame oil
1/2
teaspoon ground black pepper
These
can also be added.
Green
Peppers
Yellow
Onions
Carrots
julienned
Mushrooms
Of course adjust ingredients’ to
your liking; I tend to get carried away with the garlic. In a large reseal able plastic bag or bowl, combine
soy sauce, sesame oil, sesame seeds, garlic, sugar, salt, black pepper, and green
peppers, place beef, carrots, and onions in the bag; seal, and shake to coat
the vegetables and beef with the sauce. Refrigerate for at least 2 1/2 hours. I
prefer to marinate mine overnight to let the flavor soak in. Heat your grill
and grill, I have a nice indoor grill and a Korean grill I use. You can add Korean
side dished like kimchi and lots of others to have a great dinner. I recommend
not to use a frying pan to cook, it has a tendency to ruin the flavor. Enjoy!
